Our Story

The Street City Church is a story of the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His commission of reaching people with the life-changing news of His love and forgiveness through the work of Jesus Christ.

It all started in 1918 as a Mission Hall in Tory Street, amongst hovels filled with many broken hearts and often destitute families. Christian people used the Mission Hall to reach out with the love of Christ. After 10 years, the first Sunday morning service started in 1923 and, in 1928, a new brick building was built for the growing church.

In the mid 1950’s the leadership followed the vision and established a new facility in Mt Victoria 6 Elizabeth Street, a church built with a vision to broadcast the message of Christ across the radio.

Until the 1980’s live radio broadcasts regularly included children and adult choirs, musical groups and soloists. There has always been an ongoing commitment to mission. Many international mission organizations have had their beginnings through the people of this Church.

By the end of the millennium, it became clear that another building move was necessary and so a new facility in the city was developed and opened in November 2002.

The past decade has been one of foundations. Physically we continue to develop a multifunctional facility, and spiritually we continue to establish a model of ministry and mission for the 21st century.

It is our heart’s desire to impact our city, nation and world with the life changing message of Jesus Christ. And we know that God, who has begun a good work in us, will bring it to completion for His glory alone as he does immeasurably more than all we could ever ask or even imagine!

Mission

Our mission is to help people become total followers of Jesus, people who love God unrestrainedly and love others unreservedly. We see a follower of Jesus Christ, a disciple, as someone who will be growing and helping others grow in these five areas;
  • Word – engaging with and being transformed by the Bible
  • Worship – bring God glory through Spirit led worship, both corporately and as a personal life style
  • Warmth – Caring for, encouraging and loving each other
  • Witness – Building bridges and speaking the gospel into others’ lives
  • Works – Gift based service for the Lord in the Church and the World

Governance

The elders (“Eldership”) of The Street City Church provide spiritual oversight, governance, direction and leadership for the overall church, entrusting the implementation of that direction into the hands of the ministry leaders and staff, under the leadership of the Senior Pastor.

The Senior Pastor is held accountable for fulfilling the Eldership’s direction which allows the elders to focus their gifts and time on the their Biblical mandate to lead and shepherd the church, while allowing ministry leaders the opportunity to maximize their gifts and talents as they lead their ministries and make practical decisions on how to implement and carry out the direction provided by the elders.
