Pastors’ Pen - Sunday 29 April ‘07

Early on Wednesday morning I joined hundreds of other people underneath the shadow of the war memorial to commemorate ANZAC Day at the the dawn service.  I personally found it very moving to reflect on the sacrifice that countless men and women have made over the years for the sake of our nation.

Perhaps for me the greatest moment was to watch the soldiers’ procession at the end of the service.  It was moving to see people from various wars, both old and young, bearing the scars of battle.  For some those scars were physical, for many the scars were emotional.  The faces told stories of memories that probably should not be held, moments of war that have indelibly marked their life.  At times such as these, the pain of loss and fear surfaces again.  And their jackets bore medals that told of times of service where they counted the cost and “did what it took” in the situations they were sent to.

There is also a procession that followers of Jesus are a part of.  God leads us in a triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreaks everywhere the fragrance of knowledge of him (2 Corinthians 2:14).  We are in this procession.  We are observed by others, and the way we walk, and talk, and act tells the story of our life in Christ.

The question that begs to be asked: As others see you in this procession, what story do you tell?  You may have scars and you may even walk with a limp.  Does your life show that you are doing whatever it takes to live as a total follower of Jesus?

Blessings,

Nick and Sarah
