The Street City Church is a story of the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His commission of reaching people with the life-changing news of His love and forgiveness through the work of Jesus Christ.

It all started as a Mission Hall in Tory Street, amongst hovels filled with many broken hearts and often destitute families. Christian people used the Mission Hall to reach out with the love of Christ. After 10 years, the first Sunday morning service started in 1923 and, in 1928, a new brick building was built for the growing assembly of Christian believers. During the building program the church met in the basement of the grandstand at the Basin Reserve. The next 30 years saw many people give their lives to Jesus and be transformed by His power. From bible classes to Missionaries sent out to far away lands Jesus Christ was building His church.

In the mid 1950’s the leadership followed the vision and established a new facility in Mt Victoria 6 Elizabeth Street, a church built with a vision to broadcast the message of Christ across the radio. Until the 1980’s live radio broadcasts regularly included children and adult choirs, musical groups and soloists. The work originating in this building also included youth cafes, boys’ and girls’ activity nights – called “Rallies”, camps, open air evangelism and programs for people of all ages. There has always been an ongoing commitment to mission. Many international mission organizations have had their beginnings through the people of this Church.

By the end of 1999 it was clear that another building move was necessary. The church had grown and the building was sold for just under $1,000,000. With Sunday services at Wellington High School and a night church gaining momentum at an office block in Oxford Tce, the search was on for a venue to house the future. Our new venue in Hania Street was purchased for $1,100,000 and another $1,700,000 has been spent on fitting out the open warehouse which was opened in November 2002. Amazingly this venue is only one street away from Elizabeth Street – the vision for a large inner city church continues to grip our hearts and define our reality.

The past four years have seen God grow and develop the staff and ministries of the church. With expanding numbers and multiple services we are continually looking for ways to impact our city, nation and world with the life changing message of Jesus Christ.
